UK Maths Challenge
Congratulations to the Year 7 and year 8 pupils who took part in the UK Maths Challenge. Four of them also achieved Bronze or Silver awards. They are (left to right) Jack, Danielle, Gabrielle (Year 8) and Demi (Year 7). Gabrielle also achieved the Best in School award. These all represent fantastic achievements, as the challenge is aimed at the most able pupils in England and Wales. It has been running since 1988 and is co-ordinated by the prestigious School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds. Well Done!
Dr Carpet
Dr Carpet, Rodger Peach came into College to talk about Mathematics in the real world. He discussed with pupils setting up a company and then the maths involved in his job. The pupils were riveted and learnt a great deal about types of carpet solutions made to clean them and dealing with customers. A great session. Thank you Rodger.
Aquinas College
Aquinas College have been into college to work with some of our year 10 students. They introduced the pupils to ‘Tangles’, which is a mathematical study of knots and how they relate to areas of science, such as the periodic table, and how they can be used to help analyse DNA. The lesson was both informative and interesting and again helped the students realise just how closely maths and science are linked in the practical world. The students found the lesson engaging and were constantly tested in a practical and mathematical way. Thanks to Aquinas, C Smith.
RAF Maths Mission
Corporal Al Hadfield and Sergeant Mick Hill from the Armed Forces Careers Office came into college to work with all our Year 10 pupils. Our students were involved in activities that demonstrated the importance of Maths in a real world context. The sessions were extremely successful and the students gained an insight into the varied uses of Mathematics
