European Languages Department
At Reddish Vale we believe that linguistic competence in at least one other language than English will enhance the social growth of young people in a swiftly changing world. Learning languages is learning to live together. We believe that learning a foreign language can give a sense of achievement which enhances self-esteem, can provide intellectual stimulation and, quite simply, can be fun.
In Year 7 European Langauges at Reddish Vale is an option subject with all students having the choice of either French or German.
Statement of Aims
- To enable our pupils to communicate effectively and confidently in the appropriate language, thereby aiding the development of their social competence
- To provide positive, successful, and enjoyable learning experiences which may encourage our pupils to continue their study of the same language or another language for leisure or work purposes
- To give the children an insight into the culture and civilisation of the peoples around the world who speak the language being studied
- To develop positive attitudes to speakers of foreign languages and an unprejudiced approach to other cultures and civilisations thereby contributing to the development of a more tolerant society and world
- To encourage an awareness of the nature of language, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the mother tongue
- To encourage the development of more general learning skills (eg memorising, prediction, selection and inference)
