Overview of the curriculum at RVTC
The curriculum at RVTC aims to provide a broad, balanced and coherent path which is relevant to individual needs and aspirations. The curriculum follows the guidance provided by the LEA and the National Curriculum.
The curriculum structure is constantly under review so that it follows any new guidance and can respond to changes brought about by the demands of industry and commerce. In the first three years an emphasis is placed on the acquisition of skills and knowledge that provides a broad basis and balanced foundation for future study.
On entry to the college students are placed in mixed ability tutor groups. In years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 some subjects are taught in ability groups.
We spend time in year 9 advising and guiding students in making appropriate choices of the subjects they will follow for their GCSE courses. The breadth of subjects we are able to offer allows students to keep as many career options open as possible. Parents' evenings are held in year 9 to help keep parents informed as to the subject choices available.
Technology forms the cornerstone of our curriculum. For more information about Technology at RVTC click here.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3), students can expect to be taught subjects from the entire curriculum.
In students' final two years of education, they will be taught English, Maths, Science (Double Award), Citizenship/Lifeskills/RE, PE, Technology, a Modern Language and Information Technology.
They will also study a further three subjects, chosen from: Rural Science, Art: Photography and Graphics, ICT, Health and Social Care, Expressive and Performance Arts, Drama, Dance, Geography, History, Modular Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, French or German.
