Mobile Phone Policy
THE NEW POLICY
Mobile phones and other personal hi-fi equipment (MP3 players, iPods etc) must not be used on the college site—this includes classrooms, corridors and social areas.
Mobile phones with image capability must not be brought onto the college site at all.
Is this policy the same at other schools?
Yes, all secondary schools in Stockport are having the same policy. Some have introduced it. Others, like us, are just doing so.
WHY THE CHANGE?
Personal hi-fi equipment is a health a safety risk as pupils do not know what is happening around them.
These items are a hindrance to teaching and learning.
They cannot be allowed into exam rooms (even if they are in a bag).
Theft of mobile phones from young people is one of the most common crimes.
The photographing or filming of people without their consent breaks the law (Data Protection Act Schools 1998 and the Learning and Skills Act 2000).
Mobile phones, especially those with image capability, are being misused.
Pupils use phones to make unnecessary and inappropriate contact with parents during the day.
SOME QUESTIONS
Can my child bring a mobile to use on the way to or from college?
Yes, but we would discourage this. The important thing is that it must not be used, or seen, on the college site.
What if there is an emergency?
True emergencies are very rare. When they do happen you can contact us on the college landline and we will pass a message to your child. If ever we need to contact you we will do so. It is very important that we are kept up-to-date with your telephone number!
What happens if my child’s phone gets lost?
Again, we feel they are best left at home. We accept no responsibility for any loss, nor will we investigate it. Any equipment which is brought and kept in bags should be insured and clearly marked with your child’s name.BREAKING THE POLICY
This new policy will be strictly enforced.
If your child does not follow this policy then he/she will have to give the mobile phone or personal hi-fi equipment to a member of staff. It will then be put in a marked sealed envelope and kept in a safe place until you, the parent/guardian can collect it. Confiscated items will not be returned to pupils. You will need to bring your numbered receipt with you to collect items.
This new policy is to help us get the best out of your child, to help improve teaching and learning, and to help keep your child safe.
